    Introduction

You’ve done your keyword research. You have a list of terms your potential customers are searching for. Now what?

This is where most businesses stop — and where most keyword strategies fall apart. Having a list of keywords is not the same as having a strategy. The missing piece is keyword mapping: the process of assigning the right keywords to the right pages on your website so every page has a clear, focused SEO purpose.

Without keyword mapping, you risk multiple pages competing against each other for the same term, important keywords going untargeted, and Google struggling to understand what each page is actually about.

This is part of the Day 2 Keyword Strategy series from the 7-Day SEO Checklist for Growth by Malama Digital — your step-by-step guide to building a stronger digital presence in Hawaii and beyond.

    What Is Keyword Mapping?

Keyword mapping is the process of assigning specific target keywords to specific pages on your website. Each page gets one primary keyword and a small set of related secondary keywords that it is optimized to rank for.

Think of it like a seating chart for your keywords — every keyword has an assigned seat (page), and no two keywords that are too similar should share the same seat.

    Example:

Page: /hawaii-seo/ Primary Keyword: Hawaii SEO services Secondary Keywords: local SEO Hawaii, SEO agency Honolulu, Hawaii search engine optimization

Why Keyword Mapping Matters for SEO

    • Prevents keyword cannibalization — where multiple pages compete against each other for the same keyword, splitting your ranking power
    • Ensures every important keyword in your strategy has a dedicated page working to rank for it
    • Helps Google clearly understand the purpose and topic of each page on your site
    • Makes on-page optimization faster and more focused — you know exactly what keyword each page needs in its title tag, H1, and meta description
    • Identifies content gaps — keywords you want to rank for but have no page targeting yet

    What Is Keyword Cannibalization?

Keyword cannibalization happens when two or more pages on your website target the same or very similar keywords. Instead of one strong page ranking for that term, Google has to choose between multiple weaker pages — and often ranks none of them well.

    Example of cannibalization:

/hawaii-seo/  →  targets “Hawaii SEO services” /blog/hawaii-seo-tips/  →  also targets “Hawaii SEO services” /services/seo/  →  also targets “Hawaii SEO services”

Three pages fighting for the same keyword — none of them winning. Keyword mapping solves this by assigning that keyword to one clear owner and making sure the other pages target different, related terms.

How to Create a Keyword Map: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Gather Your Keyword List

Start with the keyword research you completed in Day 2 of the SEO checklist. You should have a list of 20–50 keywords organized by search volume, keyword difficulty, and intent. If you haven’t done this yet, use tools like Google Search Console, Ahrefs, Semrush, or Google Keyword Planner to build your list.

Step 2: List Your Most Important Pages

Create a list of your top 10–15 most important pages — your homepage, core service pages, location pages, and top blog posts. These are the pages that need assigned keywords first.

Step 3: Match Keywords to Pages by Intent

Match each keyword to the page that best matches the searcher’s intent. Ask yourself: if someone searched this keyword, which page on my site would best answer their need?

    • Informational keywords (how to, what is, guide) → blog posts
    • Commercial keywords (best, top, reviews) → service or comparison pages
    • Transactional keywords (hire, buy, get a quote) → service pages or contact page
    • Navigational keywords (brand name, specific business) → homepage or about page

Step 4: Build Your Keyword Map Spreadsheet

Create a simple spreadsheet with these columns:

    • Page URL
    • Page Title
    • Primary Keyword
    • Secondary Keywords (2–3 per page)
    • Search Volume
    • Current Ranking Position (if known)

    Example row:

URL: /hawaii-seo/ Title: Hawaii SEO Services | Malama Digital Primary: Hawaii SEO services (320/mo) Secondary: local SEO Hawaii, SEO agency Honolulu Current Position: #8

    Step 5: Identify Content Gaps

After mapping your existing pages, look at the keywords left over with no assigned page. These are your content gaps — topics your target audience is searching for that you have no page covering. Add these to your content creation backlog as future blog posts or service pages.

Step 6: Optimize Each Page for Its Assigned Keyword

With your keyword map in place, go through each page and make sure the primary keyword appears in the title tag, H1, meta description, and naturally throughout the page content. This is where keyword mapping connects directly to on-page SEO.

    The One Primary Keyword Rule

Every page should have exactly one primary keyword. This is the term you most want that page to rank for, and it should appear in the most prominent SEO elements: the title tag, the H1, and the meta description.

Secondary keywords are supporting terms that are closely related to the primary keyword. They appear naturally throughout the page content and in H2 subheadings. A page should have no more than 2–3 secondary keywords — trying to target too many dilutes your focus.

✅  1 primary keyword + 2–3 secondary keywords per page

❌  5+ unrelated keywords crammed into one page

Common Keyword Mapping Mistakes to Avoid

    • Mapping the same keyword to multiple pages (cannibalization)
    • Choosing keywords based on volume alone without considering intent
    • Forgetting to update your keyword map when you add new pages
    • Over-optimizing — stuffing the primary keyword into every sentence
    • Leaving high-value keywords unmapped with no page targeting them

Tools to Help with Keyword Mapping

    • Google Search Console — See which keywords your pages are already ranking for and identify cannibalization issues
    • Ahrefs Site Explorer — Find which keywords each page ranks for and spot overlaps between pages
    • Semrush Keyword Gap — Compare your keyword coverage against competitors to find unmapped opportunities
    • Google Sheets or Notion — Build and maintain your keyword map spreadsheet

    Pro Tips

    • Review and update your keyword map every quarter — search trends change and your site grows, so your map needs to evolve with it
    • Use Google Search Console’s Performance report to check if multiple pages are ranking for the same query — this is the fastest way to catch cannibalization before it becomes a serious problem
    • When in doubt about whether a keyword deserves its own page or belongs on an existing one, check the search intent — if the top Google results for that keyword are all blog posts, create a blog post; if they’re all service pages, optimize a service page

Why Keyword Mapping Matters for Hawaii Businesses

For Hawaii businesses targeting customers across multiple islands or service areas, keyword mapping is especially important. A Maui-specific page, an Oahu-specific page, and a general Hawaii page all need distinct primary keywords — otherwise they’ll cannibalize each other and none of them will rank well for their target location.

At Malama Digital, keyword mapping is one of the first things we do for every new SEO client. It’s the foundation that everything else — on-page optimization, content creation, and link building — is built on.

    What’s Next

With your keyword map in place, the next step is putting those keywords to work on your actual pages — starting with your title tags.
